THE MAXIMALIST

“Queen Victoria said that red and green require much in between,” according to Derrill Osborn in 2006 when we visited his crammed and colorful Oak Lawn town house, below. We love how the former Neiman Marcus fashion exec layered on the luxury with fringe, fur, figurines, majolica, crystal and a veritable stampede of bovine art.

THE TRADITIONALIST

The grand walnut staircase of the Parks Estate, a landmark Lakewood manor, above, was restored as part of a full-house renovation in 2008. The home was built in the 1920s and once served as the East Dallas YMCA. With woodwork this gorgeous, the new owners wisely opted to keep the art and furnishing spare, choosing only pieces that reflected the home’s sense of solid craftsmanship.

 THE MODERNIST

A serious Georgian manor in Highland Park went playfully modern in 2007, above, in the hands of decorator James McInroe. He slathered the two-story entry – trim and all – in dark gray paint. The scheme makes the white-lacquered étagère and milky Murano glass lamp visually pop, as does a dramatic trio of silk-screened prints by Fort Worth artist J.C. Pace III that hangs above the stairs.

THE CONTEMPORIST

A three-story Oak Lawn townhouse get a dose of jaw-dropping retro-chic with ‘Superstar,’ laminated paper wall covering. The alluring face on the wallpaper was first commissioned as an art piece by LA decorator Phyllis Morris in 1965. Her daughter discovered the work two years ago and it was reinterpreted as a repeating pattern wallpaper. “A lot of people think it looks like Edie Sedgwick,” says Dallas designer Rick Rozas, who chose the covering along with his design parter Alice Cottrell for the project.
